Gluten Free Barcelona: Copasetic Cocktails and Food

Copasetic Cocktails and Food is a restaurant that turns into a bit of a cocktail bar at night, and has a fantastic allergy-friendly menu. We stopped in for lunch with the kids, and the first thing I noticed was despite the fairly young and hip crowd, the staff was extremely welcoming and accommodating of my two children.

Located just a few metro stops from Placa Catalunya, it is very central and easy to find. The restaurant is less than a five minute walk from the nearest metro stop.

The bar area at the front of the restaurant. It's a very comfortable spot, with a few tables outside and a dining room that expands past the bar area.

We had been out walking all morning (my fitbit was at 18000 steps) and my two and six year old sons had walked every step of them with my husband and I. They were tired, hungry, and cranky, and the staff was nothing short of fantastic when dealing with them. They were kind and patient, and won my kids over fairly quickly. It instantly put us at ease and allowed us to enjoy our meal.

I must say from the start that Copasetic is not a 100% gluten free restaurant. They are very upfront on their menu and on their website about that. However, almost the entire menu was either naturally gluten free or could be made gluten free, not to mention a large selection of lactose free, vegetarian, vegan, and organic options.

The symbols are all explained at the bottom of the menu. As you can see, almost everything either is or can be made gluten free.

More importantly, the staff was very knowledgeable about cross-contamination issues, and we felt as though they really took us seriously. We asked one of the servers why the restaurant had such an allergy friendly menu and she said that the chef had an intolerance to many foods, and so created a menu that is a bit more imaginative than what you find at many other restaurants. My son gets very sick if he eats any gluten at all, and he did not get sick after eating here.

I liked that the chef understands what food restrictions are all about, and that my son wasn't relegated to one or two menu items. In fact, the choice was so varied that we ordered all of our meals gluten free. They even had gluten free beer available, which my husband ordered and quite liked. It was a quinoa based beer, which I've never seen anywhere else.

My husband got the chicken burger with lettuce, tomato, avocado, red onion, and more. My son likes his burgers plain, so he ordered just the burger. I ordered the beef burger that included thinly sliced beets, which were a perfect accompaniment to the rest of the burger toppings. They don't do fries, but add a baked potato and salad on the side. For my youngest we ordered gluten free pancakes which he ate so quickly I didn't get a clear photo!

I was too full from my burger for dessert, but my son ordered the vanilla ice cream that is both gluten and lactose free. My husband ordered the gluten free chocolate and banana crepe.

Even the ice cream presentation for a 6 year old was done well.

The cocktail list was quite long as well (given that it is also a cocktail bar), but there was also a nice choice of fresh juices and freshly made smoothies available, as well as coffee and tea.

I would definitely recommend Copasetic as a great place for lunch or dinner, even with kids in tow. They have a separate Sunday brunch menu that looked fantastic as well, if only we weren't in the mood for burgers!

Everything about our visit was positive. The menu was varied and offered plenty of choices, there was only a small surcharge for gluten free bread, and the servings were quite generous. The quality of the food was excellent, and it was evident that the staff takes pride in what they do. They were friendly, patient even when my two year old had a mini-meltdown, and were on-top of things when it came to understanding food restrictions.

If we didn't know it was gluten free, we wouldn't have been able to tell, even with the bread. That is the true sign of good gluten free food!
